Gampaha District UNP Parliamentarian Upeksha Swarnamali, who was assaulted on Monday, is receiving treatment at Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital. Police told that they were questioning the MP’s husband over the incident. Sources at the SJGH said that ‘Paba’, as Upeksha is popularly known, had received head injuries. The MP had been admitted to the Neuro Surgical Ward No. 18 under Dr. (Mrs.) Maheshi Wijeratne, sources said.
Upeksha, who supported General Sarath Fonseka’s presidential election campaign, contested the General Election in April 2010 on the UNP ticket. Having secured the second highest number of preferential votes in the Gampaha District, she switched her allegiance to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the vote on the 18th Amendment to the Constitution last year.
